Neuroanatomy and Physiology of the Vestibular System
Choi Jeong-Yoon

Abstract
The vestibular system detects the angular and linear acceleration upon the head, thereby attributing in maintaining spatial orientation. The peripheral vestibular system is in the inner ear and consists to otoliths and semicircular canals. The neural signals are conveyed via the vestibular nerve to the vestibular nuclear complex and vestibulocerebellum. After neural computation estimating rotational velocity, gravity direction, and inertial acceleration, the neural signals finally reach at the extraocular motor neurons, spinal motor neurons and autonomic neurons as well as higher cortical areas. In this way, the neural signal drives the vestibulo-ocular , vestibulospinal, vestibulo-autonomic reflexes and vestibular perception. In this review, we overview the anatomy and functional connectivity of the vestibular system.
